Emergency Dental Care: When to Head Straight to the Dentist

When to Head Straight to the Dentist

We all know that feeling of dread when something unexpected happens to our teeth. But how do you know if it’s a minor issue or a true dental emergency? Knowing when to seek immediate care can save you pain, time, and even your teeth!

What Qualifies as a Dental Emergency?

While any dental problem can feel urgent, true dental emergencies require immediate attention to prevent further damage or complications. Here are some situations where you should head straight to the dentist:

  • Knocked-Out Tooth: Whether it’s from a sports injury (RU: 4) or an accident, a knocked-out tooth needs to be addressed ASAP. Time is crucial for successful re-implantation.
  • Severe Toothache: A toothache that is persistent, throbbing, and doesn’t respond to over-the-counter pain medication could indicate an infection or serious damage.
  • Abscess: A dental abscess is a serious infection that can cause swelling, fever, and intense pain (RU: 3). It requires immediate treatment to prevent the infection from spreading.
  • Facial Swelling: Swelling in your face or jaw (RU: 3) could be a sign of a serious dental infection or injury and needs urgent evaluation.
  • Uncontrolled Bleeding: If you experience significant bleeding from your mouth that doesn’t stop after 15 minutes of applying pressure, seek immediate dental care.
  • Broken or Fractured Jaw: This type of injury requires immediate medical attention.

What Can You Do While Waiting for Emergency Care?

  • Knocked-Out Tooth: Gently rinse the tooth with water (avoid scrubbing), try to place it back in the socket, or store it in milk or saliva until you can see a dentist.
  • Toothache: Rinse your mouth with warm salt water, apply a cold compress to the area, and take over-the-counter pain medication.
  • Bleeding: Apply firm pressure to the area with a clean cloth or gauze.
